Driven by a commitment to sustainability and with ambitious 2030 goals, Mandarin Oriental sought an efficient solution to decarbonise a fundamental aspect of guest comfort: hot water for showers and the spa.
Ensuring a reliable, instant supply of domestic hot water (DHW) for discerning guests, across its luxurious rooms, suites, and world-class culinary facilities, demands a significant amount of energy, historically met through the burning of natural gas.
Mandarin Oriental's ambition was to transition this critical service to a cleaner, more efficient energy source, upholding its environmental commitments without compromising day-to-day operations or the aesthetic integrity of its landmark property.
Naked Energy and its delivery partner SHEco designed a bespoke VirtuHOT installation, which delivers pre-heated water to the hotel’s domestic hot water system, directly reducing reliance on natural gas and ensuring that guest comfort is delivered with a reduced environmental footprint.
A total of 120 VirtuHOT collectors generate 39 MWh of heat annually, with a peak capacity of 48 kWₚₜₕ. The system includes a 1,000-litre storage tank and saves 7.3 tonnes of carbon each year, equating to 182 tonnes over its 25-year lifetime.
The installation covers 90m2 of gross roof area maximising the available but limited roof space. Connecting it with the plant required bespoke pipework for both the hot and return flow, including flexible and rigid copper pipes, which were custom-built and manifolded at both the head and bottom ends of the system.
