Weno Pluimvee

Weno Pluimvee is a commercial poultry producer based in the Netherlands, operating large-scale broiler houses across a multi-building facility. The site runs continuous thermal loads year-round to maintain the precise climate conditions that broiler production demands, from heating house environments to hot water for biosecurity and cleaning-in-place operations.

Decarbonising the Farming and Agricultural Sector

Agriculture accounts for a significant share of energy consumption in the Netherlands, with intensive livestock facilities among the most heat-dependent operations in the sector.

Poultry production places particular demands on thermal systems: broiler houses require closely controlled ambient temperatures throughout the growth cycle, and hygiene protocols generate consistent demand for process hot water. For many operators, fossil fuels remain the default, and the pathway to decarbonisation has been unclear.

The Brief

Weno Pluimvee sought to reduce the carbon intensity of its heating operations without compromising the environmental controls that broiler welfare and food safety standards require. The facility needed a reliable, high-output solar thermal solution capable of contributing meaningfully to annual heat demand across its production site, integrated with existing infrastructure and suitable for the Dutch climate.

The Solution

A 90 m² VirtuHOT array was specified and installed to address the facility's base thermal load. Naked Energy's evacuated tube collector technology is well suited to agricultural applications: the high energy density of the system delivers strong thermal yields from a compact footprint, which is a practical advantage on working farm sites where roof and ground space competes with operational requirements.

‍

The system generates 33,000 kWh of thermal energy per year, displacing fossil fuel consumption and delivering a carbon saving of 6.89 tonnes CO2 annually. For a facility of this type, that reduction represents a tangible step toward compliance with tightening sustainability requirements across the Dutch and wider European agricultural supply chain.

VirtuHOT's evacuated tube design maintains performance in diffuse light conditions, making it a dependable contributor to annual heat output in northwest European climates. The integration with the site's existing heating infrastructure allows the solar thermal system to offset gas consumption directly, reducing both carbon output and exposure to fossil fuel price volatility.
